5 Tips for Stress Free Telecommuting in the Digital Age

More and more companies are encouraging employees to work from home. It can be less expensive and these days technology makes getting work done across distances easier and easier. But some people find the idea of working from home daunting and isolating. It may feel like you spend all your time working since there is no boundary between office and home.
Following these tips will help you to regain the work-life balance you had when you worked in a traditional office, but without the long stressful commute.

Set business hours and stick to them.

It’s tempting to take care of dishes during business hours or to work on a project at night since everything is easily accessible, but keeping your time separate allows you to focus on one task at a time and give you real down time. Answering the occasional email during off hours is a business reality today, but limiting such work can reduce stress.

Treat your office space like it is an office.

And make sure others in your household treat it that way too. Kids and spouses coming in and out can be an added distraction. Wading through toys and clothes to get to that file you are looking for adds frustration to your day. An organized space will save you time in the long run.

Take breaks.

In an office environment you would take a lunch hour or go for a walk. Working from home you should take the same time to take care of yourself. Take some time to get away from your computer screen and get a change of scenery, even if it’s just to your kitchen for a snack. You will reduce stress and be more productive in the long run.

Enjoy the perks!

Take advantage of having your own space to play some music while you work. Appreciate not having to drive or take mass transit into work each day and having that time back in your life. Consider using that time to make yourself a healthier lunch.

Stay connected socially with your coworkers.

It can feel isolating to work from home. Counteract that by making an effort to get to know your coworkers on a personal level. Start your phone calls in a friendly way. Ask about how your colleagues’ day is going in your emails. Use instant messaging to have an actual conversation with your coworkers and feel free to have some fun with emoticons. Technology can help you get close to people even if you are across the country.
